Born in 1981 in Kealakekua, Hawaii, Amy is a graduate of Holualoa Elementary School, Kealakehe Intermediate School, Hawaii Preparatory Academy High School (‘99) and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree with honors in Economics and Finance from Washington University in St. Louis Mo. (’03). During that time she established herself as a very bright and articulate student, a fierce athletic competitor, a gifted musician, and an active community volunteer and citizen. During her early years, she was an active member of the Mokuaikaua youth ministry in Kona. She currently lives in San Francisco, California.
In her young 28 years of life Amy has worked as owner of her own coffee business in Kona, as counter help in a shave ice store front, as a financial conflict resolution clerk for a major hotel on the Kohala coast, as a student intern for the Dept. of Education in Washington D.C., an elected Student Body Campus Director of Public Relations for Washington University, a volunteer for numerous American Cancer Society Relay for Life events and other community non-profit programs. She has worked as a planner for Gap and Banana Republic in their world headquarters in San Francisco, and currently works as a buyer for Walmart.com online retail store.
Amy has followed her doctor’s advice to take 6 months off of work in order for her to do: 5 months of chemo and targeted therapy @ one infusion every three weeks. She will have three to four weeks recovery following chemo (depending on white cell count) then mastectomy and reconstruction, followed by a year of targeted therapy and five years of tamoxifen. This is if everything goes according to plan.
Her employer has been very supportive. Temporary disability benefits, critical medical insurance, and state benefits cover some of the concerns regarding cost of treatment, apartment rental, and living expenses, but finances are a concern even without unforeseen complications or delays. She will have some expenses for imaging (she has already had 4 or 5 scans with many more to come), labs, and other expenses such as acupuncture treatments that are paid out of pocket. Rent is extremely expensive in San Francisco. Due to the economic environment and my own fight with lung cancer just over a year ago, we her parents, are not in a position to easily help financially support her though all the possible expenses that are likely to arise.
Amy’s mom Lynn, my wife of 30 years and business partner, is has been living on her couch in order to be her main caregiver. Amy has a wonderful boyfriend and group of friends who have been extraordinary in showing their love and support. While I very much want to be there to help and hug her, I can best serve in this situation by keeping my business in Kona alive and help pay the bills. In a difficult economic environment a fundraiser is one of the best ways that I can do my part. Amy tells Team Amy that she wants to kick breast cancer’s butt. :) Please help us to help her do just that.
Thank you.
